Slender False Brome Identification and Survey Workshop

Slender false brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum) is a fiercely invasive, perennial grass that forms dense stands of itself, outcompeting native species. It can be found in just a few areas of New York State, the majority of which are in western New York, including Bergen Swamp, Letchworth State Park, and Genesee County Park and Forest. This limited range makes containment and management feasible, but requires immediate, rapid action.

WNY PRISM is leading this charge and has formed the Great Lakes Slender False Brome Working Group. This group, led by Brittany Hernon, works to determine the presence and distribution of this species, and to identify Best Management Practices on how to effectively manage it.

To spread this information, WNY PRISM is hosting a Slender False Brome Identification and Survey Workshop for land managers, researchers, citizen scientists and anyone else who is interested. Participants in this workshop will learn how to identify and survey for this species, a protocol that can be easily adjusted to different species. Discussions on management and tours of the current research plots will be included as well.
