SUMMARY:Managing Spotted Lanternfly in New Jersey: Experiences from the field
DESCRIPTION:The first spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) detection in the U.S. was in Berks County\, Pennsylvania in 2014. Since 2014\, spotted lanternfly has spread to 17 states\, including New York. Dr. Tony Cullen will share his four years of experience working on the spotted lanternfly program in New Jersey for the U.S. Department of Agriculture\, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. He will discuss spotted lanternfly’s biology\, natural history\, and current distribution\, share his insights and experiences for best management practices to combat this invasive species\, and ways in which you can get involved. \nThis seminar is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Described as “one part acrobat\, one part expert rope climber\, one part tree physiologist\, and several parts competitor and thrill seeker” Mark Chisholm is well known in the climbing world. Mark has won the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) New Jersey Chapter Tree Climbing Championship 21 of the last 22 years and won the ISA International Tree Climbing Championship in 1997\, 2001\, and again in 2010.  \nIn this workshop\, Mark will discuss and demonstrate climbing\, rigging\, and ropework. SUMMARY:Sustaining Ash Partners Network Kick Off Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join the launch of the Sustaining Ash Partners Network (SAP-Ne) to promote a collaborative approach to ash preservation in the Northeast\, with a morning of learning and dialogue with experts across Tribal Nations\, academic\, governmental\, and private organizations. \nThe preservation of ash in the face of emerald ash borer (EAB) is a growing concern. Contributing to this forest health challenge\, it is often increasingly difficult to work across boundaries and respond at the scales needed to develop lasting solutions. SUMMARY:Webinar: Dutch Elm Disease and Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Benjamin Held\, Senior Scientist\, and Ryan Murphy\, Researcher\, Department of Plant Pathology\, University of Minnesota \nFor nearly 10 decades\, the invasive DED pathogen Ophiostoma novo-ulmi has been decimating American elms (Ulmus americana) and other native elm species in Minnesota and across the country. The American elm once lined streets across Minnesota\, and for good reason. Its elegant form and tolerance to the harsh urban environment made it one of two premier canopy species. American\, along with red (U. rubra) and rock (U. thomasii) elm\, also provide critical benefits to ecosystem functioning\, wildlife\, and insects. Control measures so far have relied on sanitation and chemical control\, both of which are expensive methods considering the large numbers of trees affected. Varied disease resistance has been identified in a small number of elms; however\, additional genetic diversity is needed to combat a pathogen that has a changing virulence. Our elm selection program is aimed at identifying\, propagating\, and screening survivor elms for DED tolerance from across the state of Minnesota. In addition\, our reintroduction planting program will also return much needed DED resistant genotypes back into the landscape in both urban and natural forested landscapes. \n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Annual ReLeaf Summer Conference
DESCRIPTION:New York ReLeaf is a state program promoting sound management and care of community trees across our state. It is a cooperative effort coordinated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the NYS Urban Forestry Council (NYSUFC)\, with major funding supplied through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service. The goal of New York ReLeaf is to create partnerships among tree professionals\, citizen volunteers\, educators\, government\, and the private sector. The annual ReLeaf State Conference brings together interested parties from across the state to share experiences\, ideas\, and new information. \nAll tree enthusiasts are invited to attend this year’s ReLeaf Conference at the Hilton Albany from July 24 – 26\, 2024.  Trees can fix and mitigate issues ranging from climate change to stormwater management. Considering trees in all stages of community planning helps maximize their benefits. We’ll hear from speakers on how to plant trees properly. Join our Trail Survey Program and you can help map invasive species while you’re out hiking! Your contributions will improve invasive species presence and distribution data and can help guide invasive species management efforts in our region.\n\n \nThe training will be split into an indoor/classroom portion and an outdoor/practical portion. During the indoor portion\, attendees will learn how to identify focal invasive plant species and how to use the iMapInvasives mobile app. During the outdoor portion\, participants will practice identifying plants and submitting reports to iMapInvasives. DESCRIPTION:Spotted lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula\, Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) is an invasive planthopper first discovered in Pennsylvania in 2014 and has since spread to 21 U.S. states despite extensive eradication efforts. To continue spreading north\, L. delicatula must be capable of surviving low winter temperatures. DESCRIPTION: \n\n\nLearn how to identify some of western New York’s common and priority invasive plant species\, how to report your observations and why doing so can help protect our natural areas. During the indoor portion\, attendees will learn how to identify invasive plant species and how to use the iMapInvasives mobile app. During the outdoor portion\, participants will practice identifying plants and submitting reports to iMapInvasives. \n \nThe objective of this training is to provide specific information to professionals\, community scientists and the public so they can effectively identify and report invasive plant species in parks and other natural areas\, or even in their own backyards. WNY PRISM’s Best Management Practices guides will also be available for attendees who are interested in learning how to manage specific species. \n\n\n \nRegistration is required by Thursday\, May 30\, 2024.
