SUMMARY:Annual ReLeaf Summer Conference
DESCRIPTION:New York ReLeaf is a state program promoting sound management and care of community trees across our state. It is a cooperative effort coordinated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the NYS Urban Forestry Council (NYSUFC)\, with major funding supplied through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service. The goal of New York ReLeaf is to create partnerships among tree professionals\, citizen volunteers\, educators\, government\, and the private sector. The annual ReLeaf State Conference brings together interested parties from across the state to share experiences\, ideas\, and new information. \nAll tree enthusiasts are invited to attend this year’s ReLeaf Conference at the Hilton Albany from July 24 – 26\, 2024.  Trees can fix and mitigate issues ranging from climate change to stormwater management. Considering trees in all stages of community planning helps maximize their benefits. We’ll hear from speakers on how to plant trees properly. Attendees will also have the opportunity to network and exchange ideas with leading urban forestry specialists and professionals. \nMore information and registration is available on the Urban Forestry Council’s webpage:  https://nysufc.org/releaf-annual-conference/. \nThere is a scholarship opportunity for Urban Forestry Council members. This opportunity is available for persons looking to attend the Annual ReLeaf Summer Conference. UF Council members may also apply for a scholarship toward the Municipal Forestry Institute (MFI) training\, the ISA Conference\, or ISA Chapter workshops. See the Urban Forestry Council’s webpage for more information & the scholarship application form: https://nysufc.org/scholarships/.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Dutch Elm Disease and Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Benjamin Held\, Senior Scientist\, and Ryan Murphy\, Researcher\, Department of Plant Pathology\, University of Minnesota \nFor nearly 10 decades\, the invasive DED pathogen Ophiostoma novo-ulmi has been decimating American elms (Ulmus americana) and other native elm species in Minnesota and across the country. The American elm once lined streets across Minnesota\, and for good reason. Its elegant form and tolerance to the harsh urban environment made it one of two premier canopy species. American\, along with red (U. rubra) and rock (U. thomasii) elm\, also provide critical benefits to ecosystem functioning\, wildlife\, and insects. Control measures so far have relied on sanitation and chemical control\, both of which are expensive methods considering the large numbers of trees affected. Varied disease resistance has been identified in a small number of elms; however\, additional genetic diversity is needed to combat a pathogen that has a changing virulence. Our elm selection program is aimed at identifying\, propagating\, and screening survivor elms for DED tolerance from across the state of Minnesota. In addition\, our reintroduction planting program will also return much needed DED resistant genotypes back into the landscape in both urban and natural forested landscapes. \n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Sustaining Ash Partners Network Kick Off Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join the launch of the Sustaining Ash Partners Network (SAP-Ne) to promote a collaborative approach to ash preservation in the Northeast\, with a morning of learning and dialogue with experts across Tribal Nations\, academic\, governmental\, and private organizations. \nThe preservation of ash in the face of emerald ash borer (EAB) is a growing concern. Contributing to this forest health challenge\, it is often increasingly difficult to work across boundaries and respond at the scales needed to develop lasting solutions. To address this need\, SAP-Ne supports a regional response to EAB through education\, outreach\, and engagement with diverse forest stewards across the Northeast (i.e.\, Maine\, New Hampshire\, Vermont\, New York\, and Massachusetts) by encouraging landscape level actions to sustain ash\, sharing stories of hope\, and amplifying the cultural significance of ash among Indigenous peoples. \nThe first kick-off webinar will: \n\nAnnounce our multi-year network goals;\nExplore western scientific and Indigenous perspectives on ash stewardship;\nShare experiences to inspire and engage forest stewards in ash preservation;\nIdentify gaps in regional training and resources which SAP-Ne will aim to fill; and\nServe as a call to action to address the ecological\, social\, and cultural impacts of EAB.\n\nThe speaker lineup includes: \n\nAnthony D’Amato\, Professor and Forestry Program Director\, University of Vermont\nRichard Silliboy\, Basketmaker and Vice Chief\, Mi’kmaq Nation\nCaitlin Cusack\, Forester\, Vermont Land Trust\nLes Benedict\, Environment Division Assistant Director\, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe\n\nFollowing the plenary talks\, attendees will be invited to participate in breakout sessions\, led by program partners from their associated state (i.e.\, ME\, NH\, VT\, NY\, MA)\, where participants will have the opportunity to share their concerns\, lessons learned\, and resources/training opportunities and/or needs. \nAre you interested in learning more about stewarding ash across the landscape? Then click here to sign up for this event today! \nThis event is approved for 1.00 SAF Category 1 Continuing Ed Credit. \nThe network is supported by the USDA Forest Service Landscape Scale Restoration program. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Rachel Swanwick at rswanwick@forestguild.org.

SUMMARY:Northeast Aquatic Plant Management Society’s 2024 Autumn Webinar Series: Spotlight on Grass Carp
DESCRIPTION:USGS research in support of Grass Carp Management in the Great Lakes and Upper Mississippi River Basins \nSpeakers: Patrick Kocovsky\, Matthew Acre\, Marybeth Brey\, Andrea Fritts\, Corbin Hilling\, Ryan Jackson\, James Roberts\, and Stephen Spear\, U.S. Geological Survey \nAbstract: The USGS conducts research in support of management of Grass Carp within an integrated pest management framework following the Department of the Interior’s Invasive Species Strategic Plan and the USGS Invasive Carp Strategic Framework. USGS scientists are researching: early life history to inform locations and hydraulic conditions when spawning occurs; several deterrents that affect adult movement and spawning and have the potential to reduce egg hatching; and behavior and seasonal movement of Grass Carp to inform deterrent locations. Research is conducted in collaboration with state management agencies and several task groups\, committees\, and commissions that establish priorities for Grass Carp Management. \nBiography: Patrick Kocovsky is the Aquatic Invasive Species Program Manager for the US Geological Survey\, which includes administration of the USGS Invasive Carp research program. Prior to his current role\, Patrick was a researcher on Lake Erie\, where he led development of the Grass Carp research program and conducted research on several fish species on Lake Erie. Patrick completed his graduate degrees at Penn State University and BS at Colorado State University. \nOngoing response efforts for Grass Carp in the Laurentian Great Lakes \nSpeaker: Ryan Young\, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service \nAbstract: Invasive Grass Carp were first introduced to the Great Lakes in the 1980s and have since been captured in every basin except Lake Superior. Successful reproduction in Grass Carp has only been confirmed in the Lake Erie basin; however\, managers do not consider the population to be established. Foraging from abundant Grass Carp may cause substantial ecological and economic damage\, adversely affecting vegetated habitats\, fish communities\, and fisheries of the Great Lakes. To address the threats of Grass Carp\, the Lake Erie Committee and Great Lakes Fishery Commission developed an adaptive response strategy in 2018 (for 2019-2023) that was revised with new information in 2023 (for 2024-2028)\, which includes short-term response efforts necessary to prevent Grass Carp from attaining densities that cause adverse impacts. Dedicated Grass Carp “strike teams” administered through various institutions (Michigan Department of Natural Resources\, Ohio Department of Natural Resources\, University at Buffalo\, University of Toledo\, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) implement year-round response efforts. I will provide an overview of the Grass Carp Response Program and highlight key findings from relevant research and management occurring across the Great Lakes. \nBiography: Ryan Young is a Fish Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office at the Detroit River Substation in Trenton\, Michigan. He has worked as the Grass Carp Response Program lead on Lake Erie since 2018. Prior to joining the Service\, Ryan worked for many natural resource institutions\, including the University of Michigan\, University of Illinois\, U.S. Geological Survey\, Little River Band of Ottawa Indians\, Michigan State University\, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. He has two bachelor’s degrees (Fisheries and Wildlife Management; Entomology)\, a master’s degree (Natural Resources and Environment)\, and is a Certified Fisheries Professional (American Fisheries Society). Ryan loves spending time with friends and family\, especially his wife and two kids. He also enjoys the great outdoors. \nRegister here: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/3349481196782578781 \nOnce you register for the webinar you will receive an email from “Watershed Management” with a link to join the webinar. SUMMARY:Opportunities for the biological control of European frog-bit in North America
DESCRIPTION:Tune in to hear about the search for a European frog-bit biocontrol agent! Presented by Philip Weyl with CABI Switzerland. \nIn 2024 with funding from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)\, CABI in Switzerland initiated foreign exploration for natural enemies occurring in the native range of European frog-bit (EFB). EFB is native through much of Europe and parts of temperate Asia as well as North Africa. It was introduced into North America as an ornamental in the early 1930s\, with the initial introduction into Ottawa in Ontario\, Canada thought to originate from the Zurich Botanical Gardens\, Switzerland\, thus Switzerland and surrounding areas were a good place to start to search for a biocontrol agent. During surveys at least two potential biological control agents have been recorded\, a Hydrellia sp. fly and the weevil\, Bagous puncticollis. In addition to this\, water soldier\, Stratiotes aloides\, also introduced in North America (currently only in Canada)\, will be considered during surveys in the native range given the phylogenetic relatedness and geographic overlap with European frog-bit. In this presentation Philip will give an update on the progress made in the first year of surveys and plans going forward. \n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:WNY PRISM Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Hunters Training
DESCRIPTION:The eastern hemlock is a hugely important tree species upon which entire ecosystems depend. Unfortunately\, these majestic trees and the numerous benefits they provide are threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive\, aphid-like insect. Slowing the spread of HWA is one of the best ways we can help preserve our hemlocks. Early detection of emerging infestations is a great way to do this\, but we need volunteers like you to help! Join WNY PRISM’s Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Hunters Program to learn how to identify\, survey for and report HWA\, and then adopt a location to survey this winter! \nThis event will feature an indoor training at the library followed by an outdoor portion to practice how to survey for and report HWA. Please be prepared to spend time outdoors with appropriate clothing and footwear. \nRegistration is required by Wednesday\, January 15\, 2025. Register at https://bit.ly/2025HWATraining. Attendance is limited to 30 people. More event details will be emailed to registrants. \nInclement weather date is scheduled for Saturday\, January 25; registrants will be notified in advance of any changes via email. \nQuestions?
