SUMMARY:Opportunities for the biological control of European frog-bit in North America
DESCRIPTION:Tune in to hear about the search for a European frog-bit biocontrol agent! Presented by Philip Weyl with CABI Switzerland. \nIn 2024 with funding from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)\, CABI in Switzerland initiated foreign exploration for natural enemies occurring in the native range of European frog-bit (EFB). EFB is native through much of Europe and parts of temperate Asia as well as North Africa. It was introduced into North America as an ornamental in the early 1930s\, with the initial introduction into Ottawa in Ontario\, Canada thought to originate from the Zurich Botanical Gardens\, Switzerland\, thus Switzerland and surrounding areas were a good place to start to search for a biocontrol agent. During surveys at least two potential biological control agents have been recorded\, a Hydrellia sp. fly and the weevil\, Bagous puncticollis. In addition to this\, water soldier\, Stratiotes aloides\, also introduced in North America (currently only in Canada)\, will be considered during surveys in the native range given the phylogenetic relatedness and geographic overlap with European frog-bit. In this presentation Philip will give an update on the progress made in the first year of surveys and plans going forward. \n\n\n\nRegister here!

SUMMARY:WNY PRISM Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Hunters Training
DESCRIPTION:The eastern hemlock is a hugely important tree species upon which entire ecosystems depend. Unfortunately\, these majestic trees and the numerous benefits they provide are threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA)\, an invasive\, aphid-like insect. Slowing the spread of HWA is one of the best ways we can help preserve our hemlocks. Early detection of emerging infestations is a great way to do this\, but we need volunteers like you to help! Join WNY PRISM’s Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Hunters Program to learn how to identify\, survey for and report HWA\, and then adopt a location to survey this winter! \nThis event will feature an indoor training at the library followed by an outdoor portion to practice how to survey for and report HWA. Please be prepared to spend time outdoors with appropriate clothing and footwear. \nRegistration is required by Wednesday\, January 15\, 2025. Register at https://bit.ly/2025HWATraining. Attendance is limited to 30 people. More event details will be emailed to registrants. \nInclement weather date is scheduled for Saturday\, January 25; registrants will be notified in advance of any changes via email. \nQuestions? Contact WNY PRISM at wnyprism@buffalostate.edu or by phone at (716) 878-4708.

SUMMARY:Plants and People: Examining how Indigenous knowledge systems help conserve native plant communities
DESCRIPTION:As one of the largest herbaria in the southeast\, the University of Georgia Herbarium\, in collaboration with Indigenous knowledge holders\, demonstrates the critical role of herbaria in documenting plant diversity and safeguarding traditional ecological knowledge and practices. By preserving and contextualizing botanical specimens\, herbaria offer insights into plant-human interactions\, including medicinal\, nutritional\, and cultural practices. This partnership empowers Indigenous voices and integrates traditional and scientific knowledge\, fostering a holistic approach to biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management. Leveraging herbaria as repositories of traditional ecological wisdom promotes biocultural conservation\, intercultural dialogue\, and resilience within socio-ecological systems\, especially in times of accelerating environmental change. SUMMARY:From research to integration: Biological control of introduced Phragmites in Ontario\, Canada
DESCRIPTION:Biological control releases of the stem-boring moths Archanara neurica and Lenisa geminipuncta offer a promising new tool in the toolbox for integrated weed management of introduced Phragmites. Since the first releases in Ontario in 2019\, we have developed core operational protocols to rear\, release\, and monitor the agents and have released approximately 30\,000 insects across 50 sites. This presentation will provide an overview of (a) the initial years of the biological control program; (b) promising initial monitoring evidence of agent populations beginning to establish and having localized impacts on introduced Phragmites; and (c) ongoing efforts to scale up and integrate biological control with conventional management across the province. \nLearn more and register here.
