Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Survey: Volunteers Needed!

The Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is a hugely important tree species upon which entire ecosystems depend. The species provides stream habitat for trout, creates habitat for countless native plant and animal species, and enhances any outdoor recreation experience. Unfortunately, these majestic trees are under attack from the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), an invasive, aphid-like insect.

Slowing the spread of HWA is the most important way we can help preserve out hemlock forests. The early detection of emerging infestations is a great way to do this, but we need volunteers like you to help!

Join WNY PRISM, Erie County, NYS Hemlock Initiative, and Cornell Cooperative Extension for a two-part virtual training and field survey event.

Virtual Training:
Saturday, January 22; 10 AM – 11:30 AM
Learn about hemlock biology and how to identify hemlock woolly adelgid; iMap invasive tutorial; and winter hiking safety essentials. An optional Q&A and survey networking session will follow. Stick around to get your survey questions answered and meet people who may be surveying in the same park as you!

Field Survey:
Saturday, January 29; 10 AM – 12 PM
We will head outside and put our training to work! Learn to survey for and identify hemlock woolly adelgid in the field. Meet at the Chestnut Ridge Casino, 6121 Chestnut Ridge Road, Orchard Park 14127

Attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and wear warm, sturdy footwear.
