Great Lakes Slender False Brome Working Group
The Great Lakes Slender False Brome Working Group was established to improve the understanding and management of slender false brome (Brachypodium sylvaticum) within New York State and the Great Lakes Basin. The Working Group addresses the threat posed by this species by coordinating management efforts and educating the community to increase awareness and involvement in these efforts.
The Threat
Slender false brome forms dense clumps that outcompete other vegetation, reducing native biodiversity and negatively impacting the vegetative structure of natural areas. Found in a wide-range of habitats including full-sun, full-shade and from very dry to moist conditions, slender false brome doesn’t appear to have many limitations as to where it may establish. This species also produces high quantities of seed which are spread on hiking gear, mowing equipment and by deer, and it is not palatable to wildlife or livestock.

Core Functions:
Partner/Network Coordination and Communication:
Facilitate the exchange of information, expertise and resources among members of the Working Group, additional stakeholders and the public.
Education and Outreach:
Increase awareness of this species by providing learning opportunities and access to identification, survey and management materials.
Management:
Develop Best Management Practices for Brachypodium sylvaticum by working with partners to implement and assess different removal methods.
Survey and Monitoring:
Determine the presence and distribution of this species, and make information publicly accessible to improve management success.
Spread Prevention:
Promote practices that decrease the transport of Brachypodium sylvaticum seeds and plant material by human activity through an understanding of pathways of invasion.
