WNY PRISM Lending Library
The WNY PRISM Lending Library was developed to provide partners with the opportunity to borrow invasive species outreach items for use in regional events and educational efforts. Items identified here are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Rules and restrictions do apply. If you are interested in borrowing something, or would like more information, please contact WNY PRISM through wnyprism@buffalostate.edu, and write “Lending Library” in the subject line.
Check your Trees for Invasive Pests!
August is National Tree Check Month and the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) is the focus of these outreach efforts, as WNY PRISM and its partners across the country work to raise awareness of this emerging threat to the hardwood forests of North America. In WNY PRISM, we have 2 opportunities to get involved.
For individuals, you can assist with early detection by checking your trees and pool filters for ALB and reporting any potential sightings to DEC. When checking trees, look for round exit holes about the size of a dime in branches and trunks of host trees. ALB also leaves sawdust-like material called frass that collects on branches and around the base of trees.
For groups, you can host an ALB tree tagging event. WNY PRISM has informational tags that can be tied around ALB susceptible trees. These tags are perfect for use along high traffic trails, to help raise public awareness about this priority pest.
DEC is asking you to report insects that resemble ALB, either by emailing photos to foresthealth@dec.ny.gov or mailing insects to DEC’s Forest Health Diagnostics Lab at 108 Game Farm Road, Delmar, NY 12054, Attn: Liam Somers.

WNY PRISM Invasive Species Coloring Book!
Whether as part of an outreach event or in the classroom, the WNY PRISM Invasive Species Coloring Book is a great, interactive way to engage youth in learning about the impacts of invasive species. You can download and print the whole thing, or just the species you’re interested in!
Emerald Ash Borer Costume
The WNY PRISM Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Costume is a great way to attract attention to your outreach display and engage youth. It may also be used to greet guests at presentations, and many other forest pest related events.
Invasive Species Posters
WNY PRISM invasive species posters are perfect for rotating displays, such as those in visitor centers, libraries or schools. These are perfect for Invasive Species Awareness Week or to highlight local events throughout the year. Posters are available as kits – each including the main poster (1), iMapInvasives poster (1), and up to 4 additional 11″ x 17″ posters of your choice, depending on availability.
Posters can be requested for single events or for one month at a time.
