Volunteer Workdays: Japanese Stiltgrass Removal

WNY PRISM is hosting a series of volunteer removal workdays focused on early detection priority species, Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum). Japanese stiltgrass is a high priority invasive species recently found in parts of western New York, including Erie County. It is an annual, short stature grass that quickly spreads to form extensive mats that harm native plants and plant communities. It can also alter soil nutrient cycling processes, facilitate erosion, inhibit tree survival and growth, and reduce habitat and forage for wildlife.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to work alongside WNY PRISM staff and community members as we hand pull Japanese stiltgrass from several sites along Cazenovia Creek in West Seneca. The plant is simple to ID and easy to pull, and we always have a great time working and learning!

Four Opportunities to Get Involved!

WNY PRISM is hosting Japanese Stiltgrass Volunteer Workdays along Cazenovia Creek, in West Seneca.

• Saturday July 23, 2022 @ Mill Road Park
• Saturday August 6, 2022 @ Cazenovia Creek WMA
• Saturday August 20, 2022 @ West Seneca Soccer Complex
• Saturday September 10, 2022 @ Mill Road Park

Volunteer workdays will be held from 9:00 am – noon. Registration is required.

Light refreshments will be provided, as will water, bug spray and gloves. We ask that volunteers wear long pants, shoes plus socks, and bring a reusable water bottle. You may also want to bring your own gloves (gardening gloves work great!), a hat and/or sunscreen.
