Help In Our Fight

WNY PRISM and our partners provide opportunities for groups and individuals to volunteer and help in our fight against invasive species. Opportunities include surveys and mapping, invasive species removal projects, and education and outreach events. Visit our Calendar of Events or contact us at wnyprism@buffalostate.edu/(716)-878-4708) to ask about volunteer opportunities that reflect your interests.

Education & Outreach

Help spread the word about invasive species! There are exciting opportunities available to a wide range of individuals with different interests, knowledge, and abilities. Activities may include operating a display booth at outreach events, fairs, farmer’s markets, music festivals and more! Perhaps you are a graphic designer or writer interested in developing content for our displays, brochures, flyers, and newsletters.

Honeysuckle harvest 2016! WNY PRISM joined with the Land Conservancy to remove honeysuckle from the Kenneglenn Nature Preserve as part of 2016 Invasive Species Awareness Week.

Invasive Species Removal

WNY PRISM and our partners need your help with removing invasive species from important conservation areas. Volunteer workdays are held throughout the field season to manually and mechanically remove both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species. These events may include hand pulling water chestnut by canoe, pulling up buckthorn with a weed wrench or cutting down vegetation. Special events/days for larger groups wishing to volunteer are also held throughout field season by many of our partners. Check out our calendar to keep informed of these events across western New York.

Report Invasive Species

Attend an iMapInvasives Training to learn how you can share information about invasive species populations. This online, GIS based data management system tracks invasive species presence and distribution across the region. Data entered into iMapInvasives is essential for land managers to make smart management decisions. Trainings include invasive species identification and use of iMapInvasives, and may be provided for interested groups. For more information see our Report an Invasive page.

Intern

If you are interested in an internship with WNY PRISM, please contact Andrea Locke, WNY PRISM Coordinator at lockeas@buffalostate.edu. Please bring your ideas for projects!
