Early Detection Site Monitoring

Site monitoring is an essential component of successful invasive species management. Once an initial removal effort is complete, the target invasive species may re-emerge. This may be due to an established seed bank that was not exhausted during the treatment phase of management, a source population not discovered during the assessment phase, or just due to a less than effective with treatment. Whatever the situation, it is important to continue monitoring until you are confident the
population has been eradicated.

WNY PRISM’s site monitoring program involves early detection sites that have undergone management and we follow an established monitoring protocol to determine if a site has been eradicated. Once eradicated, the site is removed from our site monitoring list.

Early Detection Site Monitoring Protocol

WNY PRISM has established a protocol to address annual site monitoring for early detection/rapid response efforts. The protocol may be adjusted to account for species characteristics such as length of seed bank or associated pathways of invasion.

After removal has taken place (year zero), annual site monitoring is conducted for three years. If no individuals are observed during this time, monitoring shifts to every other year. If no individuals are observed after five and/or year seven, a site will be identified as ‘presumed eradicated’ and should be
reported to iMapInvasives.

If at any point during annual monitoring individuals are observed at or near the original infestation site, the infestation reverts to active management (year zero). Once treatment is complete, annual site monitoring resumes at year one.

Site Monitoring Example 1:

Water Lettuce

  • 2015 – Active Management: Infestation Reported, Confirmed, and Assessed, Treatment Complete (YEAR ZERO)
  • 2016 – Site Monitored – no individuals found (YEAR ONE)
  • 2017 – Site Monitored – no individuals found (YEAR TWO)
  • 2018 – Site Monitored – no individuals found (YEAR THREE)
  • 2019 – Not Monitored (YEAR FOUR)
  • 2020 – Site Monitored – no individuals found (YEAR FIVE), site is presumed eradicated, report to iMap.

Site Monitoring Example 2:

Japanese Stiltgrass

  • 2014 – 2017 – Active Management: Infestation Reported, Confirmed, and Assessed, Treatment Complete (YEAR ZERO)
  • 2018 – Site Monitored – no individuals found (YEAR ONE)
  • 2019 – Site Monitored – no individuals found (YEAR TWO)
  • 2020 – Site Monitored – 6 individuals found, all removed (Active Management, YEAR ZERO)
  • 2021 – Site Monitored – no individuals found (YEAR ONE)
  • 2021 – Site Monitored – no individuals found (YEAR TWO)
  • 2022 – Site Monitored – no individuals found (YEAR THREE)
