Join WNY PRISM’s team of community scientists to help survey and map invasive species along trails in western New York!
Do you enjoy hiking? Join our Trail Survey Program and you can help map invasive species while you’re out enjoying nature! Your contributions will help improve invasive species presence and distribution data and can help guide invasive species management efforts in our region.
No prior experience is necessary, we will teach you all you need to know! Find out more below!
2024 Schedule
Training: Saturday, June 22, 2024; 10:00 am – 12:00 pm; Charles E. Burchfield Nature & Art Center, 2001 Union Road, West Seneca, NY 14224
The training will be split into an indoor/classroom portion and an outdoor/practical portion. Please be prepared to spend some time outdoors with appropriate clothing and footwear.
Survey Time Period: Monday, July 1 – Monday, July 22, 2024
Community scientists survey any publicly accessible trail(s) of their choosing during this timeframe.

Latest News: 2024 Trail Surveys Have Wrapped Up!
Thanks to your survey efforts, 127 reports of invasive species have been added to iMapInvasives! There were 14 different species reported, with the most frequent being common buckthorn, honeysuckle spp. and Canada thistle. Other species included multi-flora rose, mugwort, Fullers teasel, Phragmites, tree-of-heaven, bull thistle, glossy buckthorn, Japanese barberry, knotweed spp., tufted vetch and knapweed spp. Surveys were completed along trails in 11 different locations across western New York.
