Terrestrial Workshop
Workshop Title
Vegetative Reproduction in Invasive Plants: Impacts and Management Strategies
Description
What makes certain invasive species like knotweed, Phragmites and tree-of-heaven so difficult to control? Dig below the soil’s surface with WNY PRISM in this free 2-hour workshop where you’ll learn how vegetative reproductive structures like rhizomes, clonal suckers, tubers and more influence invasive plant growth and spread. After reviewing the basic tenets of integrated pest management, PRISM staff will delve into the different ways plants reproduce asexually, and how this influences management strategies.
The objective of this workshop is to provide specific information to professionals, community scientists and the public so they can effectively identify and treat these invasive species on their properties. After a classroom presentation, participants will take a tour of Walton Woods Park to see invasive species in the landscape and learn how site characteristics influence control measures.
This workshop will offer two NYS pesticide recertification credits in the following categories: Category 2: Forest Pest Control Category 3a: Ornamentals, Shade Trees and Turf – PENDING APPROVAL. To receive credits, you must register at least 24 hours before the workshop and show up 10 minutes early to sign in. Please bring your photo ID and applicators license and attend the entire workshop. Walk-up registrants will not be able to receive pesticide credits but are more than welcome to join the workshop.

Aquatic Management Workshop: Planning for Longterm Pond Management
Description
Join WNY PRISM for a free workshop on aquatic invasive plant species management, designed for professionals, community scientists and the public. This workshop will cover the things property owners and managers need to consider when developing a plan of action to address aquatic invasive species (AIS) in ponds, with a focus on plant species. Topics will include species identification, survey and management methods, and the unique challenges of AIS management in a pond. We will be using a pond at Walton Woods as a test case for developing a long-term management plan.
